harwinton town sign

harwinton town sign

In 1680, fearing that the British Government might take away their "Western Lands" the Colony of Connecticut gave the entire northwest corner to the Hartford and Windsor Plantations. After the threat subsided, the General Assembly asked to have the land back, but Hartford and Windsor refused on the grounds that the land was legally given to them. The resulting settlement, in 1726, was named Harwinton. If you're there, this classic old sign may point out where to go next.
